A short history
Although often referred to as a "new town", Harlow's history dates back to Roman times. The modern town was developed in 1947 to the masterplan of Sir Frederick Gibberd as part of the government's post-war New Town programme, designed to alleviate overcrowding in London following the devastation of World War II.
A key feature of Gibberd's vision was the creation of self-contained neighbourhoods, each with its own schools, local shops, healthcare facilities, community centres, and green spaces. Church Langley was one of the later phases of Harlow's development, built during the 1990s and now comprising approximately 3,500 homes.

Shopping, eating and drinking
Church Langley itself is a residential area and benefits from a quiet, tranquil atmosphere.
There is a large Tesco for stocking up on groceries and the Brewers Fayre-owned Potters Arms provides decent, well-priced pub grub and has a warm and homely atmosphere, making it popular with families.
In the centre of Harlow, you’ll find a great selection of brand-name restaurants, plus a large number of smaller independent eateries. Whether you’re looking for European, Indian or Asian cuisine, there’s an option to suit you.
If shopping is one of your preferred pastimes, you’ll be pleased to hear there are two large pedestrianised centres: the Harvey Centre and Water Gardens. A market is held in the town centre four times a week, with Monday’s bric-a-brac proving particularly popular.
Things to do
Green space abounds in Church Langley, with the Playing Field, Brenthall Wood and Barnsley Wood all within easy walking distance. Families are well served, with two childrens play parks.
A concrete water tower, constructed in 1994, is Church Langley’s most iconic feature. Clearly visible for many miles around, the tower stores water for the businesses and homes located in the village and is also a popular location for daredevil abseilers.
A short distance away in the town centre you’ll find plenty of culture and entertainment. The town is well known for housing a major collection of over 100 public sculptures by artists such as Auguste Rodin, Henry Moore, Barbara Hepworth, and Ralph Brown. Many of these are owned by the Harlow Art Trust, an organisation set up in 1953 by Sir Frederick Gibberd, who felt that everyone should be able to enjoy great sculptures by great artists on every street corner.
The Harlow Playhouse is a fantastic entertainment venue, with live music, dance, comedy and theatre. The Parndon Mill Art Gallery and Gibberd Gallery also offer a vibrant programme of exhibitions and events.
Harlow Town Park provides a skate park, adventure playground, paddling pool and even a pets corner. If you enjoy cycling, Harlow’s network of bike trails is among the most extensive in the UK. The leisure centre offers a wide selection of sports and activities.
