Kings Group in the community – what is Play Street all about?

Here at Kings Group, we are always eager to support the communities in which we operate in any we can. One of the best initiatives we sponsor is Play Street, a local community scheme in Edmonton designed to create a safe street-space each month for kids to play in.

Started three years ago and fully approved by Enfield Council, it takes place on the first Sunday of every month, between 12pm-3pm, and allows children to play in the street freely like they did in the past.

The street is blocked off and a party-style atmosphere created for all, with local residents coming out to join in the fun.

A range of events and activities are put on throughout the seasons, ranging from BBQs and Easter egg hunts to a Christmas grotto and Halloween-themed fun.

There are football goals, volleyball nets, chalk on the ground and a range of other facilities to keep the kids entertained in a safe environment, while they are free to bring their bikes, scooters and skateboards along too.

“It’s a very neighbourly affair and typically attracts roughly 40-50 people each month, including lots of kids,” Linda Hart, who helps organise Play Street Edmonton and sits on a committee-like group working with the council to organise permission for the scheme, commented.

“There is also a WhatsApp group which helped lots of people through lockdown as we tried to keep alive the spirit of Play Street even as we were all confined to our own homes.”

She says last month was the first one back since the start of the pandemic, following sign off from the local council that the event could go ahead.

“During lockdown, we still tried to keep spirits up by posting sweets through doors at Halloween and getting someone dressed up as Father Christmas to deliver presents,” she added.

“We are very grateful for the sponsoring Kings Group provides, which helps us to buy equipment and anything else we need. We really appreciate the generosity.”

For the next event, there are plans for a karaoke machine, a smoke machine, face painting, balloons, a bubble machine and the chance to decorate biscuits, while the organisers are hoping to get the fire brigade to come down to educate kids on fire safety and what life in the fire service involves.

At Kings, we think Play Street is a wonderful initiative that helps to bring the whole community together and we are proud and delighted to sponsor it.
