A short history
Harlow may be known as a new town, but people have lived here since Roman times.
The town as it stands today was built in 1947 to the masterplan of Sir Frederick Gibberd. In order to create a community feel, Harlow was designed with separate neighbourhoods, each with local shops, health centres, schools, community facilities and green spaces.
The town offers housing to suit a variety of budgets. Harlow Old Town has the feel of a village suburb, with everything from listed Victorian and character properties to modern residential property. Newer developments include the award-winning Fifth Avenue, close to the centre of town.
If you are interested in putting your house on the market, our Sales Agents will be pleased to arrange a home valuation. Those looking to purchase property in the Harlow area can discuss their needs with our local experts and arrange viewings at suitable properties. Alternatively, if you are a Landlord considering letting your property, or you are looking to rent within the Harlow area, our Lettings Agents are on hand to support you.

Shopping, eating and drinking
If shopping is one of your preferred pastimes, you’ll be pleased to hear there are two large pedestrianised centres: The Harvey Centre and The Water Gardens. A market is held in the town centre four times a week, with Monday’s bric-a-brac proving particularly popular.
There is also a number of extensive retail parks, with big name brands including Argos, Dunelm, Homebase, Next, ToysRUs and Sports Direct, plus trade shops and car dealerships.
In Harlow you’re simply spoilt for choice when it comes to the range of restaurants. You’ll find a great selection of brand-name favourites, plus a large number of smaller independents. Whether you’re looking for pub grub, European, Indian or Asian cuisine, there’s an option to suit you.
Things to do
There is no shortage of entertainment in Harlow, with everything from arts, culture and theatre to sport, parks and nature reserves.
The town is well known for housing a major collection of over 100 public sculptures by artists such as Auguste Rodin, Henry Moore, Barbara Hepworth, and Ralph Brown. Many of these are owned by the Harlow Art Trust, an organisation set up in 1953 by Sir Frederick Gibberd, who felt that everyone should be able to enjoy great sculptures by great artists on every street corner.
The Harlow Playhouse is a fantastic entertainment venue, with live music, dance, comedy and theatre. The Parndon Mill Art Gallery and Gibberd Gallery also offer a vibrant programme of exhibitions and events. For fans of cinema, a brand new Cineworld and restaurant complex offers the latest releases.
Green spaces make up a third of the borough of Harlow, including the extensive Harlow Town Park, with a skate park, adventure playground, paddling pool and even a pets corner. If you enjoy cycling, Harlow’s network of bike trails is among the most extensive in the UK. The leisure centre offers a wide selection of sports and activities. The free Harlow Park Run is increasingly popular with runners and joggers of all ages, taking place every Saturday in the Harlow Town Park.
