Property Sellers - paint colours that add value and devalue UK homes

Choosing the right colour scheme in every room of your house can have a positive effect on the sale of your home.

The price the property sells for, the amount of time it takes to sell and the level of interest a home receives could all be determined by the paint colours of a property, according to new research.

In addition to this, unpopular paint colours can also devalue a home so awareness of this is vital.

Below, we take a look in more detail at what the research said.

The power of paint colours

The majority of the time properties are often decorated in ways that only appeal to personal preferences.

By knowing the colour preferences of the majority, homeowners can decorate their homes with colours that are guaranteed to generate interest, high offers and speed up the sales process.

Fortunately, painting the interior of a home is a cheap task that can make all the difference to a prospective buyer’s first impression.

Paint retailer, The Paint Shed, recently revealed the colours and aesthetics Brits would pick for each room if given the freedom to create their fantasy home.

Knowledge of colour preferences around the home helps us understand which colours should and should not be used to boost the prospects of selling a home.

Neutral colours are timeless

The Paint Shed survey results show that neutral colours are the most sought-after, proving that properties with neutral colour schemes are likely to reap the most benefits.

Around one third of the participants opted for neutral tones such as grey and white when they revealed their interior colour preferences.

White was the most popular paint colour for all rooms, grey was the second most popular and cream was the third most sought-after room colour according to the research.

Throughout the years different colour trends go in and out of fashion, but neutral colours remain timeless. They allow budding buyers to picture themselves in the space and decorate rooms with furniture, appliances, and other furnishings that suit their tastes.

Simple paint colours do not only generate interest in prospective buyers, but compared to intricate wall designs, the painting process is less challenging and time-consuming.

Bright, bold colours should be avoided

The Paint Shed research reveals that four in 10 British people would put in a lower offer if they disliked the interior colour palette of a property.

Roughly nine in 10 UK residents would take up to £5,000 off the price and 11% would offer between £6,000-£10,000 less if the colour palette was not to their satisfaction.

Colours that sellers should actively try to avoid to prevent putting off buyers include fuchsia, neon pink, yellow, lime green, and scarlet.

Nearly half of the participants (47%) would not like their home to be painted fuchsia, 45% were not fond of neon pink for interior decor, 43% would not like their home to be neon yellow and 42.53% would shy away from lime green.

If your property is one of these unpopular colours, it is never too late to repaint the walls a neutral shade before you put your home on the market. Paint jobs can be done as DIY tasks or a skilled professional can step in to provide a great service.
